New York Times Readership Program
Every weekday during semester, 630 free copies of the New York Times are delivered to locations across campus – thanks to the Undergraduate Assembly, the New York Times College Readership Program, the Office of the Provost, College Houses and Academic Services, and the Vice-Provost of University Life!
The New York Times-Undergraduate Assembly Readership Program, launched by UA Chair Jason Karsh in Fall 2007, means that all Penn students can pick up a free New York Times on their way to and from class or work. In addition, the New York Times sponsors one major journalist from their Speakers’ Bureau to come to campus each year, as well as a sponsorship opportunity administered by the UA worth up to $2,500.
We join our fellow students at Yale, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, St. Joeseph’s, Villanova, LaSalle, Temple, University of the Sciences, Lafayette, Bucknell, West Chester, Widener, and Not the University of Pennsylvania (Penn State), who all have collegiate readership programs (either with USA Today or the Times).
Two years on, the program remains a huge success. Each day, an average of 97% of all papers delivered are picked up by Penn students – and those papers not picked up are recycled and their cost refunded.
