It’s not too late to apply to be an Associate Member on the UA! AMs are assigned to a committee based on their interests and work on UA projects and initiatives. AMs, like all other UA members, are expected to attend weekly committee meetings and make progress on their projects. AMs can work on any project they think will help students at Penn! Past AMs have authored hugely influential resolutions and have often gone on to win a seat on the UA proper at their next election. Two of the past four UA Chairs have started their careers as AMs! Last December, the UA funded a recycling bin pilot program, providing all residents of Fisher-Hassenfeld with a free recycling bin. The distribution kick-off party was held just last Sunday abuzz with free food, rubber ducks, and bins. If gauged successful, it is our goal to implement this on a much larger level. Stay tuned!

After meeting with Housing & Conference Services to address bathroom cleanliness, agreement was reached in principle to have adhesive stickers printed and put in the corner of bathroom mirrors in the Quad with the emergency number by which a number of different issues can be addressed. In the long term, we are working with Facilities to improve Facility Focus and explore the feasibility of a UA online form, in tandem with FacilityFocus servers, that would allow a more simple and intuitive submission of bathroom issues.
In addition to our all-school emails sent roughly every month, we’ll be sending out a weekly “Assembly Line” newsletter to update you on what Penn student groups have to say, share what the UA is working on, and solicit your feedback.

RecycleMania is a 10-week competition between over 400 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, and achieve the highest recycling rate.
The 2010 RecycleMania Tournament will run from January 17 to March 28, with Penn competing in a division against its “Ivy Plus” peers at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale. Scroll down to see results from last year’s competition and learn more about what you can do to help Penn increase its recycling rate and reduce its waste in the 2010 tournament.
